Țipova Rock-Hewn Monastery

Țipova Rock-Hewn Monastery

The Țipova rock-hewn monastery, located on the right bank of the Dniester River, about 40 km from Chișinău, is one of the most impressive monastic complexes in Moldova and Eastern Europe. Built into a high cliff roughly 90 meters above the river, the monastery includes three stone-carved churches dating from the 11th to the 18th century, along with over 20 interconnected rooms, tunnels, and galleries. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that the first cells were carved as a refuge from Tatar invasions. Access is by foot, via stone-carved steps, and along the way visitors can admire the Răușorul Țipova waterfalls. Today, the monastery is an active place of worship and a major tourist attraction, known for its unique blend of nature, history, and spirituality.
